The North Blackpool Pond trail is going from strength to strength and is celebrating winning Blackpool Civic Trust's Open Space Award.
The pond trail – a partnership between Groundwork, Blackpool Council and BEAT Naturewatch links together a historic but little-known network of ponds and wetlands.
This green corridor runs through an urban area and includes 23 ponds and a reedbed, many of which are Biological Heritage Sites.
According to the Civic Trust, the award recognises almost ten years of campaigning and two years of hard work by a range of groups including the local community, BEAT Naturewatch, Groundwork and Natural England. It also recognises how the project has highlighted the biodiversity of Blackpool’s green spaces in a creative way that benefits the whole community.
In 2009 a substantial grant was received from Natural England to make the necessary improvements and raise awareness of the significance of the ponds, their scientific and local amenity value. The project is also funded by the Big Lottery Fund and United Utilities.
Extensive pond surveys have revealed that over half of the ponds on the Trail are priority habitats of high conservation value and ecological quality.
Anyone in the Blackpool area interested in the Pond Trail is welcome to get involved. Special skills aren’t necessary and training is available. It’s a chance to do something worthwhile, make new friends and learn something new. Contact pauline.taylor@groundwork.org.uk for more information.
