Through our work we improve people’s health both directly and indirectly. We run specific initiatives such as walking schemes, but much of our work helping to improve lives in disadvantaged communities affects the wider determinants of health.
We provide the facilities and support to help people become more physically active and make healthier lifestyle choices. We’ve found that encouraging people to value, use and improve open spaces is one of the most effective ways of kick-starting a revival in the fortunes of damaged communities and also helping people adopt healthier lifestyles. We create and improve footpaths and cycleways, involve people in physical work like digging and planting and encourage healthy eating by helping them grow their own fruit and vegetables on local allotment sites. Improving physical and mental wellbeing is a major outcome of many of our programmes. Spending time outdoors can also aid recovery from or help coping with long-term illnesses.
Our connections within communities and our ability to work holistically across sectors means we’re an important partner for many Primary Care Trusts and other NHS organisations.
